Another problem with his paw

For the past few days Buddy has been chewing his paw. Now, normally he leaves his injured paw alone, so this is odd behavior. Yesterday we noticed a large bump forming between two of his toes, and this morning it was larger and redder.
I called the vet this am, and he said it’s further evidence of Buddy’s body trying to fight the foreign object and infection in his body.
Prescription: Twice-daily foot soaks in epsom salts, try to pop the boil-like bump, and call Monday morning. Yuck.
As always, Buddy’s a trooper. He reluctantly let me soak his foot twice today, and he’s currently watching the kids play outside as I type. What a good boy.

I think Buddy will feel so much better without that thing dragging him down. He is a happy, stoic lab. But imagine how much of his energy is being diverted into dealing with the pain. He may surprise you by being an even happier, goofier lab after the surgery. You’ve not known him without that painful paw, right?

He’ll also be healthier, because he is fighting infection constantly. Once it’s gone, his immune system will be so relieved. You may see changes for the better, like a healthier coat, since his energy won’t be tied up with dealing with infection.

Please post after the weekend to update on the call to the vet.

Thanks for your concern! The bump is getting bigger, and it definitely hurts when I touch it. Ouch! Poor Buddy. We’ll see the good doc on Monday. In the meantime, pain meds and extra cuddling are helping. 🙂
