Scapular vs. non-scapular amputation. And dog school!

I’ve read and been told that when a dog requires a leg amputation, it’s best to take “the whole thing.”  So it threw me when the vet suggested he not remove Buddy’s shoulder blade, and leave part of his leg.

I posted a question on the Tripawd discussion boards and received some great feedback, so I can have a more educated discussion with the vet.  Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll need to call him today; Buddy has a cyst on his foot that is getting bigger and obviously causing him some pain.  Can’t this guy get a break?

We started Round 2 of Obedience School last week.  We completed Home Obedience I already, but I felt we needed to re-do the class!   My mild-mannered Buddy was barking, ignoring me, and generally not paying any attention to anything I wanted him to do.  Do they have doggie Ritalin??  We worked on “sit” last night, and with treats in my hand, he is golden.  He’s starting to “get” the “down,” but I’m not sure he’ll ever master “stay.”

I have dreams of Buddy being a therapy dog, especially as a tripawd.  He has such a gentle soul!  Guess I have some work to do!

    Hey Buddy’s people,
You’ll probably think I’m a nutty, can’t face the facts gal but I am a little hopeful when reading about the boil on Buddy’s foot. I work in human medicine and have seen MANY times the body boil up and spit something out that has been in there for a long time – splinters, pieces of metal, lead from pencils, stitches… all kinds of things eventually fester up and you squeeze them one day and out pops… whatever was in there.
I see this all the time with my own dogs and those evil Foxtails.
I’ll keep my fingers and paws crossed that this happens with Buddy and you can all carry on without all the fuss of the amputation. If not, well, it is DEFINATELY better to hop on 3 than limp on 4! I know Buddy will do well because he has the best medicine ever invented – LOVE.

Is it his front or back paw?

    Cheers,
    Colleen

I don’t think you’re nutty. As a matter of fact, I was hoping for that exact thing! However, his boil was filled with air and nothing else. Vet says the sooner we do the surgery and Buddy recovers, the happier he’ll be — and we’ll ask ourselves why we ever waited. I sure hope he’s right!

    Hey Erica,
Here’s a great story of a dog that reminds me of Buddy.

Made me cry. Very sweet story. I sure hope Buddy recovers as quickly as Jake. Thanks for sharing the video. I’m going to show it to the kids now!

Oh, and it’s his front right paw.
